Status of 1940 US Census Indexing

There are a few websites to check for 1940 US Census indexing projects’ progress. (The links below open in a new tab, so if your pop-up blocker is on, you may have to right-click on a link to open it.)

FamilySearch has all states completely indexed. It will be available to search within the next few weeks.

http://www.ancestry.com/1940-census

Ancestry.com has all states and territories searchable by name. Ancestry.com is making one pass for a names and states index, and will make a second pass for searching on the more discriminating data.

The Find My Past 1940 Census Home Page has a map showing which 40 states have searchable indexes. While there you can sign up to tell them who you are looking for, and they will send you an e-mail when your person’s record becomes available.
