Status of 1940 US Census Indexing

There are a few websites to check for 1940 US Census indexing projects’ progress. (The links below open in a new tab, so if your pop-up blocker is on, you may have to right-click on a link to open it.)

FamilySearch has all states completely indexed. It will be available to search within the next few weeks. has all states and territories searchable by name. is making one pass for a names and states index, and will make a second pass for searching on the more discriminating data.

The Find My Past 1940 Census Home Page has a map showing which 40 states have searchable indexes. While there you can sign up to tell them who you are looking for, and they will send you an e-mail when your person’s record becomes available.
